In his attempt to catch the action of the moment, Degas' ballet dancers and female nudes are in poses that make no attempt to conceal the subjects' physical exertions. His later pastels, like La Danseuse Verte (Green Dancer, 1880) have an elegance unsurpassed by any of his earlier works.
